The songwriting is political and biting without being obsessive - especially the EP's opener, the raucous, fist-pumping 'The Day After'. John Nelson's vocals are frenzied and just bratty enough to have an edge that cuts."While many in the indie-rock set are content to point a finger at the establishment while operating under its rules and regulations, New Grenada rebel against the game they're supposed to play, with remarkable results.
On The Iron Triangle, New Grenada pays homage to 70s and 80s punk with a cute 3" CD of covers of songs by the Dead Kennedys, Buzzcocks, Black Flag, and Bad Brains, among others. In classic DIY punk spirit, the packaging is a simple photocopied insert featuring zine-style cut-and-paste artwork.
Debut full length CD from Detroit's New Grenada. Features tracks produced by Brendan Benson. Do not listen to this record on your stereo. Put it on a tape, put it in a cassette player, in your tape deck in the car, anything but, don't subject this record to high fidelity. Instead, close your eyes, unless you're driving, and pretend it is ninety-four.
Debut release from Detroit's New Grenada and The Trembling. Side A starts out with an unsteady voice that reminds me of a juvenile (mostly because it's much louder) Smog and this comparison is only enforced throughout the song as it unfolds to be extremely well written. Side B in a stark but wonderful contrast starts with some low fi rock and explodes into Bikini Kill style vocals, that while not exactly new are welcomed into my heart because this style is too good to ever die.
Mature solo material rivaling her previous work as bassist for Canadian indie-rock legends, Eric's Trip. Backed by Ottawa's Wooden Stars on two hauntingly beautiful songs. Julie Doiron has turned into a formidable chanteuse of late-night incandescent proportions. Her increasing maturity is cause for considerable celebration, especially in light of the splendor of the songs on this collaboration with Ottawa's Wooden Stars.
Detroit's Cloud Car was formed in 1995, and members have gone on to currently record as New Grenada. A bit more distorted and softer than New Grenada, these two songs still highlight a very fun and catchy band, one that harkens to the sound of mid-90s Sebadoh and Sonic Youth at times.
